story without meaning

I saw a lot of Chinese cartoon at Haiyue's home, which she brought for her little Qingqing. These were old ones from 70s and 80s, and we watched most of them as kids. After 20 years, when I went over them again, there was a strong feeling of uneasiness growing out of my mind. Most of the episodes were of high quality in design and painting, really great handwork considering the low tech they used 20 years ago. However, each one of them told a moral story of some sort and warn kids against wrong doing. They were so serious and the punishment was so real that I wonder whether kids would have been terrified. The stories told you that you can not treat, or be too proud, or be greedy, or listen to wrong suggestions. No story is of no meaning, they are all good educating materials, but no fun at all. Wang xiaobo once wrote he wanted to watch novels for fun, not for education of any kind. Me, too. Our stories are too serious, too heavy for young mind. Aftern many years, most people remembered those artistic cartoons with less mearning imposed, such as Echo, Lan Huahua. Too much social function put on cartoon makes them boring.
